Adoption

Illinois has recently changed the adoption laws which means that people who were adopted through a closed adoption are now able to receive their original birth certificate and all medical information. You guys this is HUGE!!!!
For the last 30 years I have no nothing about my medical past. Every time I go to the doctor and they ask what runs in your family I have no idea and I just say I was adopted and do not know my medical history. It will be so nice to know if there is anything I should know about that could effect me.
I can also get my original birth certificate and on it I know my name is Caryn Elizabeth Weber. But it also has my biological parents name on it which means at some point I might be able to meet one or both of them and find out where I came from. I have a letter from my birth mom and I totally understand her decision. She was 17 as was my birth dad and they could not raise a child. And I think for all of us who watch teen mom and 16 and pregnant we know most if not all of those girls should have chosen adoption for their children. I was blessed to go to a great family and have anything I could have wanted as a child. I was given many opportunities that I know my birth parents could not have provided for me. And lets face it at 17 you are still a kid and a kid should not raise a kid!
But I am interested to meet them one day. To see who I look like ( I am guessing my birth mom), what characteristics I have of theirs, if I have any siblings r half siblings etc...
When you are adopted there are so many questions you have about your biological parents and for the longest time it has been impossible to get answers because it was a closed adoption and now there is a little hope. But I am also not getting my hopes up. There is a chance that my biological parents have decided they do not want their names released still and if that is the case than their names will not be on the birth certificate I get. And I understand that is their right and that might be their choice. But the cool thing is Sarah aka my twin and I might actually get to find out if we are related in some way. How crazy would that be. I mean look at us!

Every time we are out together people ask if we are sisters or related. We have gotten it since high school and I think we will always get that question so it would be nice to know if we are cousins or something. Anyways I will keep everyone posted on anything that happens. Keep positive thoughts!

  1. I am happy for you Katie, I am sure this IS a major step for all adoptive children. Like you said you had a wonderful mom and dad and family that loved and raised you as their own but I am sure with most children who are adopted, there are those unanswered questions. I will be praying all works out and I am also very glad that you Were and Are a very special part of the Kissel Family. Love you Aunt PAT
